The Kotišina Botanical Garden is located on the coastal slopes of Mount Biokovo, above the village of Kotišina, at an altitude of 350 - 500 m, and is an integral part of the Biokovo Nature Park. Approximately 300 wild plant species have been identified within the Kotišina Botanical Garden, ranging from typical Mediterranean to mountainous types. Exotics, agricultural, and medicinal herbs have also been planted in some areas. In the immediate vicinity of the garden entrance, right next to the cliff, are the walls of the large **Kaštel** (Castle) – a 17th-century fortification that is impressive in appearance.
The Biokovo Nature Park is characterized by the unique beauty of its landscape, a great diversity of wildlife, and a wealth of geomorphological forms and phenomena (caves, karrens, sinkholes, rock pools, pits, etc.). Depending on the climatic conditions and altitude, the area is covered by vegetation ranging from Mediterranean to mountainous. In addition to old forests of beech, fir, and black pine, nearly **1,500 different plant species** have been recorded in the Park, including a large number of **endemic and relict species** (Biokovo bellflower, narrow-leaved knapweed, etc.). Vertebrate fauna includes numerous reptiles and birds, and among the thirty or so mammal species living here, one should mention dormice, bats, wild boar, chamois, mouflon, and wolf. This **Croatian Lourdes sanctuary** was founded in 1908 by Bishop Dr. Juraj Carić (1867-1921), who is also buried here. The natural cave and the entire landscape, with its hills, vegetation, and stream, vividly resemble Lourdes, where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. The center includes a chapel with a sacristy, an altar in the square, confessionals, the **Stations of the Cross**, a house for spiritual retreats, and paths for processions. A new house has also been built for the needs of the sanctuary and spiritual exercises. Due to its natural beauty and tranquility, this sanctuary is **frequently visited throughout the year**. The main pilgrimage days are: February 11, March 25, August 15, and September 7 and 8.
Croatia has been one of the most sought-after Mediterranean tourist destinations for years. With its rich historical heritage, pristine nature, and over a thousand islands, it offers an unforgettable holiday reminiscent of times past. The central point of Croatian tourism is undoubtedly the coast, particularly Dalmatia with UNESCO-protected cities like Split and Trogir. In the heart of Dalmatia lies the magical Makarska Riviera. Many consider it the most beautiful part of the Adriatic, known for its long pebble beaches, crystal-clear sea, and the magnificent Biokovo Mountain that creates a unique backdrop. If you're looking for a premium seaside holiday in Croatia, the Makarska Riviera offers a wide range of accommodation, from modern seafront apartments to luxury villas with pools. Here you'll find the perfect blend of natural beauty and rich tourist offerings.
Dalmatia is Croatia's largest tourist region, home to three major tourist centers. In the northern part lies the three-thousand-year-old city of Zadar, in central Dalmatia is the city of Split, and at the southernmost point is Dubrovnik, whose old town is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Besides these main tourist centers, Dalmatia features smaller tourist towns like Šibenik, Trogir, and Makarska, as well as numerous coastal settlements along the Šibenik, Zadar, and Makarska rivieras.
Dalmatia also contains four Croatian national parks: Paklenica, Krka, Kornati, and Mljet, along with numerous speleological sites and diving attractions. The region is internationally renowned for its many islands. In northern Dalmatia stand out the Kornati archipelago and Dugi Otok with Lake Telašćica beneath 146-meter-high cliffs. Central Dalmatia features Krapanj, Hvar as Croatia's most famous and sunniest island, Brač with the famous Zlatni Rat beach, Šolta, and Vis. Southern Dalmatia is home to Korčula, Lastovo, Mljet, and the Elaphiti Islands.
The Pelješac peninsula, located in southern Dalmatia, represents an important part of Croatian tourism. Pelješac contains larger tourist settlements like Ston, Orebić, and Trpanj, along with numerous smaller villages. The peninsula abounds with vineyards, and as a unique attraction, Pelješac features a Wine Road with numerous wine cellars offering highest quality wines.
The town of Makarska developed around a natural harbor protected by the picturesque St. Peter Peninsula and Osejava Point; it's the largest and only such harbor between the estuaries of the Cetina and Neretva rivers. It provides safe shelter during bad weather, once serving sailors, pirates, and merchants, and now hosting tourist yachts, sailboats, and excursion boats. This security contributed to its development as an important trading port, particularly during Venetian and Ottoman occupation. Today, ferries depart several times daily from here to Sumartin on the island of Brač.
The sandy and pebble beach stretches almost 2 km long and remains the town's signature feature. Along pine-tree-lined promenades are numerous tourist facilities including comfortable hotels, restaurants with gastronomic specialties, and abundant entertainment options for children and adults. Makarska lies at the foot of the Biokovo mountain massif (1762 m), which protects the town from continental climate influences; resulting in lush Mediterranean vegetation with mild winters and long, warm summers refreshed by the Maestral wind. The area enjoys over 2,750 hours of sunshine annually, with average air temperatures exceeding 20°C from June to September; the crystal-clear sea also maintains temperatures above 20°C from June through October.
The rich history and culture of Makarska come alive in its charming old town and numerous landmarks. The central Kačić Square is a popular gathering spot, surrounded by historic buildings and the impressive St. Mark's Church. History enthusiasts can visit the Franciscan Monastery with its unique Malacological Museum, featuring one of the world's largest collections of shells and marine life. Along the waterfront promenade, numerous cafes and restaurants invite relaxation while reflecting the town's vibrant nightlife. The picturesque St. Peter Peninsula offers breathtaking views of the town, sea, and magnificent Biokovo Mountain.
Located in the very heart of the Makarska Riviera, Club Makarana offers an unforgettable nightlife experience featuring top DJs, vibrant atmosphere, and diverse music—from electronic beats to local hits. With its modern, stylish interior complemented by quality lighting and sound systems, Makarana is the ideal spot for those looking to dance until dawn and enjoy a night of happy revelry.
Arguably the most beautiful club on the Adriatic - Deep is located in a World War II cave, right by the sea. This summer it promises a program guaranteed to deliver wild fun for everyone visiting Makarska on their annual holiday. Attractive and unique precisely because of its location, Deep will open its doors on June 9th and proudly announces big names in club music that will, for the seventh consecutive year, shake the dance floor and reaffirm its position among the top 10 most visited nightlife destinations on the Adriatic.
Deep is celebrated in numerous tourist guides and international magazines as the most beautiful club on the Adriatic, thanks to its unique setting in a cave on Makarska's Osejava peninsula, immediately beside the sea. With very few such natural venues worldwide, it's no wonder that numerous tourists and Croatians alike choose Makarska and this club for their unforgettable summer parties.
The club consists of two parts: the aforementioned cave with natural sound insulation, designed for partying until the early morning hours, and a beautiful open terrace facing the open sea and the Adriatic islands of Hvar and Brač. The terrace is ideal for those who prefer to avoid summer crowds and wish to enjoy cocktails while watching the sea sunset and city lights.
Forget your worries and unwind to the rhythm of the waves at one of the many beach bars along the Makarska Riviera. Enjoy refreshing cocktails, premium coffee, and laid-back music while soaking up the sun or relaxing in the shade of pine trees. From lively bars with DJs to tranquil oases perfect for sunset watching, the beach bars offer perfect settings for all generations and moods.
